A COLLISION between a freight train and a grain train in Western Australia that claimed the life of a driver is being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau

The tragedy occurred at Jumperkine, about 4km east of Perth, on Christmas Eve.

About 2am on 24 December, a freight train operated by Pacific National collided with the rear of a grain train operated by Watco.

The freight train locomotive cabin was said to have been “substantially damaged” and the driver killed.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB is to examine the rolling stock and track infrastructure layout, interview personnel, analyse the train data logger and obtain documents for analysis.

A final report is to be released at the end of the investigation.

“Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify those affected and seek safety action to address the issue,” the Bureau stated.
