DEDICATED support for 230 refrigerated containers is among the features of a new $5 million logistics facility at the Port of Townsville, announced this week by logistics company NSS.

Spanning 29,630 m2, the new facility increases NSS’s storage capabilities to 4,200 TEU.

This investment provides NSS with the largest intermodal logistics facility in the port with what the company said in a statement was a combined footprint of eight hectares.

The new facility, which has just opened, is expected to significantly expand its capability to serve regional North Queensland and beyond.

"NSS has a proud and enduring history of supporting regional North Queensland," said NSS general manager Mark George.

"Our latest investment in Townsville extends our capability for customers in mining, refinery and agriculture while reinforcing our role as a long-term logistics partner to Regional North Queensland.

"These developments are a direct response to customer demand for integrated solutions that can safely handle higher volumes with greater efficiency and visibility across the supply chain."

Celebrations were also in order this week for NSS having marked 55 years since its first operation at the Port of Townsville.

It has since grown into the largest operator at the port.

The opening of the new facility occurred following a construction phase led by Stabilised Pavements Australia.

NSS manages about 20% of the total throughput for the Port of Townsville alone.

"Every investment we make is driven by a dual commitment: delivering strong returns for our shareholders while building the long-term industrial capability of regional Queensland," Mr George said.

“By expanding our footprint within the Port of Townsville, we are directly strengthening the resilience of export supply chains—not only for major industrial players but for the junior and mid-tier mining sector as well.”

The new facility is adjacent to the NSS Warehouse and Distribution Hub, with a view to completing an integrated logistics ecosystem.

This facility features:

  • 6,000 m2 of specialized warehousing for general and dangerous goods.

  • A DAFF-approved machinery wash bay for biosecurity compliance.

  • A Customs 77G bond store, providing a seamless, end-to-end solution for international trade.

NSS has highlighted its contribution to the Port of Townsville over the years, including investing in and commissioning a mobile harbour crane (known locally as Cinderella) and being the first to build a negative pressure shed for the safe storage of mineral concentrates and the first to implement advanced terminal planning systems, and the first to adopt the Qube Rotabox system.

The Qube Rotabox provides junior and mid-tier miners with an export solution praised for its efficiency and flexibility as an export solution.

“I’m proud to say that NSS continues to lead the industry in Townsville and across North Queensland,” Mr George said.

“Our willingness to invest early in innovative infrastructure and systems has delivered a number of important firsts for the Port of Townsville and reinforces our role as a progressive, solutions-focused logistics partner.”
