Daily Cargo News (DCN) is seeking a cadet journalist to come and join our small team, and learn the ropes of maritime journalism. If you have a flair and passion for writing, and are looking for hands-on experience within a daily news organisation, then a cadetship at DCN could be for you. During the 12 month program, you will be exposed to many different topics and areas of maritime, take ownership of regular pages/features in the monthly magazine, source and contribute to the daily news, interview industry figures and cover functions, conferences, and events. 

The maritime community is tight knit, and as a journalist at DCN, we are sure that you will be welcomed, not only by the DCN team, but the industry at large. 

Prior knowledge of the maritime industry is not required, but a curiosity for the workings of this fascinating industry is essential. 

Over 12 months, you will work closely with the DCN editorial team to gain experience in the following areas:

  • Receive journalism training and experience in areas such as news and feature writing, news curation and reporting, tailored specifically for maritime journalism and the maritime industry
  • Experience a broad range of journalistic topics and areas:
    • Investigative
    • Environmental
    • Economics
    • Business
    • Trade
    • Human rights/human element
    • Global journalism
    • Technology
    • Law
  • Acquire hands-on experience in creating content for various sections of Daily Cargo News
  • Work alongside DCN’s journalists and contributors  throughout the contract duration, benefiting from the guidance and mentorship of senior contributors in maritime journalism
  • Produce your own original content, with the freedom to explore and cover different stories and topics within the maritime industry
  • Get to know and engage with the maritime audience
  • Develop contacts within the maritime industry, cultivating story leads and breaking news within this specialised field
  • Receive first-hand experience and exposure to various segments of the maritime industry, for example through port and vessel visits.

Entry Requirements and information

  • Journalism Degree, or equivalent demonstrable writing ability
  • Rights to work in Australia
  • This position is a paid Cadetship program and can be Full or part time
  • Although not guaranteed, at the completion of the 12 month period, opportunities to join the DCN team as a fulltime employee can be explored.
