PORT Botany saw a 10.4% decrease in total container throughput in June, when compared with the same month last year.

The port handled a total of 214,628 TEU in June 2023 – down from 239,449 TEU the same month last year.

A significant contributor to this change was a 27.6% decrease in exports of empty containers.

In June of this year, the port exported 58,085 TEU of empties, compared with more than 80,000 TEU last year.

In contrast, full container exports from Botany increased.  In June the port exported 46,699 TEU of full containers, an increase of 9% on the same month last year.

Top containerised export commodities out of Port Botany for the month included vegetable products (6387 TEU); iron, steel, aluminium and other metals (6179 TEU); and paper, paper products and wastepaper (5915 TEU).

Total containerised imports into Port Botany in June came to 109,844 TEU. This was a 5.6% decrease on the same month last year.

Machinery was the biggest containerised import with 16,600 TEU imported over the month. This was a 14% decrease on the same month last year.

Miscellaneous manufactured articles was the second largest import commodity with 10,910 TEU (down 37.6%), followed by foodstuffs, beverages, tobacco with 11,313 TEU (down 10.9%).
