CONTAINER trade at the Port of Brisbane was on the up last month.
Total containerised cargo throughput at the port in August came to 148,229 TEU, an increase of 11% on August last year.
The port saw increases in both imports (up 15% to 71,942 TEU) and exports (up 10% to 66,713 TEU) last month, compared with August 2021.
Zooming in on imports, Brisbane saw increases in household items (up 35.4% to 9298 TEU) and “import other” (up 17% to 33,115 TEU).
There was a decrease in FAK imports through the port, declining 1007 TEU to 2357 TEU last month.
Turning to exports, increases were largely driven by big increases in containerised exports of cotton (up 65% on August 2021 to 8832 TEU) and agricultural seeds (up 67% to 6857 TEU).
And zooming out, looking at the 12 months through August, we see increases as well. In the year through 31 August 2022, the port handled 1.55 million TEU – an increase of 1.4% on the corresponding period last year.
Looking at the port’s total trade in tonnes, we also see significant increases.
In August, the port’s total trade came to just over 3 million tonnes. This was an increase of 7% on August last year. And over the 12 months to 31 August 2022, the port handled 32 million tonnes of cargo, an increase of 7% on the 12 months to the end of August 2021.
