THE PORT of Melbourne’s total container trade slid slightly in December 2022 to 261,334 TEU – a decrease of 5.2% on the same month in 2021, according to the latest trade statistics from Port of Melbourne.

Both imports and exports were down last month – full overseas exports were down 4.3% on December 2021 and full overseas imports were down 10.5% in the period.

Dry bulk trade was up 33.6% in December, over the same month in 2021, and bulk liquid was down 8.3% in the period.

Motor vehicle imports were up 7.7%, or up 2436 units in December.

And total empty containers moved was down 2.1% below December 2021.

The port said the container trade outlook for this month was tracking below January 2022.
