OOCL welcomed the new 24,188-TEU containership OOCL Piraeus into its fleet this week.

The vessel is the first of six “mega containerships” of the same capacity OOCL has ordered from Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering.

It is the second of twelve 24,188-TEU ships OOCL ordered in 2020. The first, OOCL Spain, was delivered by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering in February this year.

OOCL said the vessels in this series are equipped with advanced smart systems and green designs, such as low resistance lines design and an energy-saving bulbous bow. The company also anticipates long-term navigational safety.

OOCL Piraeus was named at a ceremony at the Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS) shipyard in China.

“I would like to especially thank the ship builder DACKS,” OOCL director of trades Teddy Fung said at the ceremony.

“This mega vessel exemplifies their ingenuity, capability and craftmanship,” he said.

“This series of containerships is an excellent example of the concept of green shipping. They enable OOCL to enhance its service offering even further, while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact per TEU.”

COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry chief accountant Jianzhong Yu was also present at the ceremony.

“DACKS will live up to the expectation of OOCL and complete the construction of the rest vessels within this series on time with good quality, in order to return the trust and support of the ship owners, and to implement development strategy of COSCO Shipping Group.

“We will give full play to the value creation role of the industrial sector, and contribute to the prosperity and development of the main shipping business of COSCO Shipping Group.”

OOCL Piraeus is due to join OOCL’s Asia-Europe service LL3 in June.

It will call Shanghai, Xiamen, Nansha, Hong Kong, Yantian, Cai Mep, Singapore, Piraeus, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Zeebrugge, Valencia, Piraeus, Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Shanghai in an 84-day port rotation.
