ROYAL Wolf has built a facility out of containers for staff working on Port of Melbourne’s Swanson Dock West remediation project.

The container supplier, in partnership with contractor McConnell Dowell, installed the facility for up to 230 staff working on the remediation project.

The facility comprises 53 shipping containers serving as lunchrooms, offices, change rooms, ablutions and a first aid room.

Royal Wolf also engineered walkways and a large dome shelter to create what it describes as a makeshift building.

“The wide range of containers will provide critical facilities and comforts for staff and workers to ensure they have all they need while completing the long-term project,” Royal Wolf project supervisor Harry Schubaji said.

“With a lot of security in place, it was difficult to get trucks in to deliver 53 containers,” he said.

“Co-ordination between our fleet department and transport company was vital to ensure everything was organised and we were able to deliver all containers in the correct sequence that they were needed.”

Royal Wolf intends to dupport McConnell Dowell through each stage of the project, including maintenance and the dismantling and relocation of the containers when phase two of the project begins.

Swanson Dock West is an international container terminal with a 944-metre wharf and three container-handling berths.

The remediation project, currently in Stage 1, involves upgrading the existing wharf structure.
