SHIPPING and logistics giant A.P. Moller – Maersk recently took part in an effort to help clean up the mighty Nile River in Egypt.

Together with a local rising start-up, Greenish, the Embassy of Denmark in Egypt organised the first Nile clean-up event for Danish companies.

The initiative was called “SDGs in action on the Nile”.

The Nile is one of 10 rivers that is reported to carry 90% of plastic polluting the oceans.

Maersk customer experience team leader, Khaled Fathy, the clean-up was an important component of their sustainability efforts.

“In the area of plastic litter, we have established collaboration with The Ocean Cleanup project,” Ms Fathy said.

“Collecting and removing plastic already in the oceans will, however, not solve the real problem which is mainly caused by insufficient waste management on land, rivers, and seam and we know that making the oceans healthy will require a multi-layer solution with a multitude of innovation and change.”
