AN ENVIRONMENT Strategy aimed at protecting Corio Bay, Victoria, has been announced by GeelongPort.
The strategy sees the port pushing towards reductions in the port’s environmental footprint, offsetting carbon emissions and using energy from renewable sources.
GeelongPort chief executive Brett Winter, said the foundations of the strategy came from their frontline workforce.
“Employee feedback has told us how important reducing our environmental impact is, because not only do we work here, but we live here too,” Mr Winter said.
Employees recently took part in an event to promote the initiative, beginning with a ‘welcome to country’ and smoking ceremony led by Norm Stanley and Nikki McKenzie from the Wadawurrung Aboriginal Corporation.
The keynote speaker, Associate Professor Peter Macreadie from The Blue Carbon Lab, presented his current research about the importance of blue carbon systems in climate change mitigation.
A highlight of the morning was the announcement of two Earthwatch Fellowships offered to GeelongPort employees who is to join a citizen science program to study climate change impacts on the Great Barrier Reef later this year.
