AN INVESTIGATION is underway into how a locomotive hauling a cargo of mineral concentrates came to stall inside Ardglen Tunnel in the Upper Hunter.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau says it is investigating “a loss of tractive effort” on a mineral concentrate train on the afternoon of Sunday 10 February.

According to the Bureau, a Qube Logistics mineral concentrate train stalled inside the Ardglen tunnel, when one of the train’s three hauling locomotives shut down.

The train ultimately had to be divided into two sections which were moved through the tunnel and into the town of Murrurundi.

After the train was recombined it resumed its journey to Newcastle. No injuries or damage was reported.

The ATSB is to obtain locomotive data logger information and interview the train crew, with a final report to be released at the end of the investigation.
