PORT of Newcastle’s total exports for the month of January were 13.1 million tonnes which was a 26.8% increase on the same month last year.  

Coal exports accounted for just over 13 million tonnes, and were sent to China, Chile, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Maylasia, the Netherlands, New Caledonia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. 

Coal exports were up 30.9% on the same month last year.  

Total imports were 484,666 tonnes with fuels (216,912 tonnes) the biggest imported product, and fuel imports were 17.1% higher than the same month last year. 

Steel imports were 27,301 tonnes which were down 50.4% on the same time last year. 

Wheat exports were just 15,192 tonnes compared to the 321,646 tonnes exported last January.  

The port recorded 203 ship visits with 149 of them being coal ships and just one cruise liner entered the port.
