CYCLONES, earthquakes and possible climate change impacts have been discussed during a gathering of engineers and other experts in Hobart.
The Crisis Management and Natural Disaster Response, Hobart Seminar, was held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor near the local waterfront and organised by the International Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC).
Jared Pettersson from Enviser Ltd spoke about the recovery of the Port of Lyttelton following the 2011 earthquake, while Baird Australia director David Taylor described some of the challenges surrounding cyclones affecting the North West shelf.
There was also discussion about insurance implications.
Defence, climate and security adviser and former Australian Army colonel Ian Cumming later gave a lively presentation about climate change and implications for ports and the boards of private companies.
The event attracted guests from around Australia as well as New Zealand, Japan and the US.
