PORT of Melbourne has reported strong container throughput continuing through July.

The port reported a total of 275,373 TEU crossed the wharves – and increase of 14% on the same month last year, according to the latest available trade statistics.

Port of Melbourne said empty container movements were the biggest factor in the result. The port handled 56,635 TEU of empty overseas container exports, an increase of 42% on July 2020.

Total overseas container throughput (including empties) for July was 236,469 TEU, an increase of 16.2% on last year.

Full overseas container imports were up 8.9% to 113,515 TEU. Commodities that showed gains for the month include machinery, vehicle parts, transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures, and others.

Overseas exports of full containers were up 5.5% to 59,582 TEU last month. Containerised export commodities that showed increases for the month include cereal grains, miscellaneous manufactures, beverages, nuts, and others.

The port said container trade for August is presently tracking below the same month last year. August 2020’s results were relatively high due to delays caused by weather, industrial action and congestion at other ports.
