VICE Admiral Tim Barrett of the Royal Australian Navy will be guest speaker at this year’s fundraising lunch for the restoration of tall ship Alma Doepel.

The fifth annual Voyage of a Lifetime lunch is set for Friday 16 August at the Grand Ballroom, Hotel Windsor, Melbourne.

Peter van Duyn from the restoration team said money raised at these events represented “a considerable contribution” towards the restoration of the 115-year-old ship.

“This is our major fundraiser event of the year,” Mr van Duyn said.

Peter Hitchener of Channel 9 News hosts the event each year with Vice Admiral Barrett, AO, CSC, (Rtd) – Royal Australian Navy confirmed for speaking duties.

He was later made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2014 for his leadership of Border Protection Command and the Australian Fleet.

Mr van Duyn said Alma’s restoration project was progressing well with the first of about 300 spotted gum planks recently being fitted to her hull.

“We expect that the Alma Doepel will be returned to the water in early 2020 to complete her fit out,” he said.
