MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, a global leader in transportation and logistics, has started developing a new MSC Air Cargo service.
The company said the move was in response to customer demand and as a complementary service to its container shipping services.
MSC said it has been developing the air cargo service for several months. The service is to be available starting early next year after MSC takes delivery of the first of four MSC-branded Boeing 777-200F aircraft. The aircraft will be operated by Atlas Air.
MSC has appointed Jannie Davel, formerly of Delta Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo and DHL to develop its air cargo business and to build the team that will implement it.
MSC Chief Executive Officer Soren Toft said, “We are delighted to announce the development of MSC Air Cargo and to welcome Jannie Davel to spearhead this exciting new offering for MSC clients. This is our first step into this market and we plan to continue exploring various avenues to develop air cargo in a way that complements our core business of container shipping.”
MSC is the largest container shipping company in the world by TEU capacity; according to Alphaliner, it controls 4.5 million TEU of container-carrying capacity, or 17.4% of the total capacity in the world.
