AUSTRALIAN Maritime College commercial arm, AMC Search, has signed a partnership with marine classification and survey institution Lloyd’s Register to deliver courses in Australia.

The agreement provides the local maritime industry with access to the training skills of Lloyd’s Register which has been delivering classification and surveying services since 1760.

AMC Search chief executive Dean Cook said the benefits were far-reaching.

“As the maritime industry workforce rapidly ages, it is essential that the next generation are upskilled to replace retiring professionals,” Mr Cook said.

“However, with a lack of high-value classification and survey training available in the Australian market this is proving to be an almost impossible task. By partnering with Lloyd’s Register, we aim to help mitigate this industry-wide issue.”

Lloyd’s Register marine business development (Australasia) manager, Pierre de Chateau said providing industry with quality maritime classification and survey graduates was an important way to ensure Australia’s maritime industry continued to operate safely.

“The maritime industry has a proud history of working to an international rules-based system, but with guidelines and standards constantly changing it is critical for Australia to stay ahead of this dynamic and fluid governance landscape,” Mr de Chateau said.

“Failure to meet international rules and guidelines can have a major impact upon a company, so having access to well-trained classification and survey expertise helps to minimise a company’s exposure to risk.”

The first course is to be be delivered from the AMC Search Darling Harbour Campus in Sydney in March.
