THE world of maritime education is mourning the passing of Professor Barrie Lewarn, an adjunct professor at the Australian Maritime College.

Gaining a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Cardiff, Dr Lewarn was later the director of the Faculty of Maritime Transport and Engineering at AMC as well as senior lecturer and principal lecturer.

Following his retirement in 2004, he continued to help AMC and AMC Search as a consultant.

This included participation in the Maritime Transport Policy Centre.

AMC Search chief executive Dean Cook said among the many interesting projects with which he was involved was modelling the potential effects of a tsunami on the coast of Tasmania.

Professor Lewarn also gave up his time to contribute to industry forums organised by Lloyd’s List Australia (predecessor of Daily Cargo News).
