THE AUSTRALIAN Maritime Safety Authority has co-ordinated a medical evacuation from a ship off South Australia.

Containership Sydney Express was near Kangaroo Island on Tuesday evening (15 November) when AMSA was notified a crewmember was unwell.

The Malta-flagged ship was sailing from Adelaide to Melbourne.

AMSA deployed a rescue aircraft and co-ordinated a medevac to assist the crewmember.

“The Adelaide-based SA Ambulance Service Rescue 51 helicopter was tasked to conduct the evacuation early yesterday evening and take the crew member to a hospital in Adelaide,” AMSA said in a statement.

“The Essendon-based AMSA Challenger rescue jet assisted with oversighting the operation.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Sydney Express is en route to Melbourne.
