THE Sydney Airport Ladies Association held its annual Christmas in July luncheon on Friday 19 July, a special event celebrating 30 years of the association. It was attended by more than 100 women from customs, quarantine, airlines, shipping lines, logistics and service providers.

It was expected to be the final event for the association, which has been bringing together women in the logistics industry since the 1908s, as the current committee were standing down.

The luncheon, sponsored by Border Bank, included SALA’s annual general meeting, where it was expected the motion be passed to finish up and distribute any remaining funds to the Smith Family and The Heart Institute.

However at the last minute, the motion was objected and it was thrown to the room to see if anyone would put themselves forward to form a new committee. After much excitement a new president, secretary and committee member were elected, with Leonie Jackson, the incumbent vice president agreeing to another year. The new committee includes Chona Martinez, Leonie Jackson, Pat Swan, Kerrie Bell, Megan White and Sue Danks.

The lunch was a vibrant celebration, with lots of laughs and raffle prizes – proceeds from the day were split between charities to support children living in poverty in Australia, and research into heart disease.
