THE Port of Newcastle will showcase its sustainability achievements to the world next week when it brings the GreenPort Live Webinar Series to Australasia for the first time.

Themed “Driving principles of sustainability” the event, which attracts a global audience across the ports sector, will feature Port of Newcastle among a panel of industry experts who will deep-dive into the latest in sustainable development and environmental practice in ports across the Asia Pacific region.

CEO Craig Carmody says attendees from across the globe will hear how Port of Newcastle is leveraging its environmental, social and governance commitments as part of delivering its ambitious diversification plans.

“Partnerships and shared thinking are critical to Port of Newcastle’s ability to find innovative ways to realise its long-term environmentally and socially responsible projects,” he said.

“By collaborating with GreenPort we have a key opportunity to connect with and learn from port leaders across the globe who are also committed to leading the way in environmental management and sustainably operated ports.”

Led by facilitator Will Glamore, chair of PIANC Australia, the panel will include Mike Gallacher, CEO of Ports Australia and Port of Newcastle’s senior manager ESG, Jackie Spiteri.

“This presents an exciting opportunity for the port, as an accredited EcoPort, to share its learnings and outcomes with a broad group of like-minded stakeholders,” Ms Spiteri said.

Port of Newcastle is the first port in Australia or New Zealand to become a member of the international EcoPorts network. It has been working across the Pacific region as an advocate of the benefits of the EcoPorts initiative and encouraging other ports follow in its footsteps.

Also joining the panel discussion is deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Declan Clausen, who will give insight into City of Newcastle’s perspective on how to successfully build a relationship between port and city with a sustainable lens.

Completing the panel is World Ports Sustainability Program, IAPH, technical director Dr Antonis Michail. He will provide a global-scale perspective on driving sustainability with his experience within the World Ports Sustainability Program.

GreenPort LIVE is a sister event to its cornerstone GreenPort Congress being held in Greece from 20-22 October 2021.
