THREE containers that fell from box ship Navios Unite (IMO 9302619) last week are likely to have drifted south-east and away from land, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority says.
As reported in DCN, the incident occurred last week off Cape Leeuwin, Western Australia, when the Liberian-flagged ship was sailing from Fremantle to Adelaide.
“None of the containers have been located at this stage, however drift modelling has any potentially floating containers moving away from land to the South East,” an AMSA spokesperson said.
AMSA is planning further searching for any floating containers that may present a hazard to shipping and boating.
“This will be conducted pending consideration of local weather and sea conditions,” the spokesperson said.
AMSA has confirmed investigations remain ongoing.
“However the vessel was inspected in Adelaide and detained for a number of deficiencies including some areas of concern in relation to the cargo securing arrangements,” he said.
ANL is the sub-charterer of the vessel.
The incident occurred just over a month after the case of the APL England which lost 50 containers into the Pacific Ocean south-east of Sydney.
