MISSION to Seafarers’ Brisbane branch has celebrated the appointment of its new President, Catherine Hindley, who was nominated for the role at the Mission’s Annual General Meeting last month.
Mrs Hindley is a vessel service coordinator with Wave Shipping, and joined the MTS Brisbane committee as a member in March last year.
Secretary for MtS Brisbane, Ross Nicholls, celebrated Mrs Hindley as well-known in the local industry, adding she “received unanimous support from the Members” following her nomination for the role.
“Catherine was awarded the DCN Award in 2022 for her services to Seafarers so it’s an extension of her already recognised support that she provides to these key workers of the global industry we are in,” Mr Nicholls said.
The appointment bears historic significance, ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s International Day for Women in Maritime, as Ms Hindley becomes only the second woman to have lead MtS Brisbane, and the first since the 19th century.
MtS Brisbane was established in 1892 by an Amy Proctor whose family, four generations on, reportedly still live in Brisbane.
Speaking with DCN, Mrs Hindley said, “It’s an incredible honour to be appointed President of the Mission to Seafarers Brisbane”.
“To follow in the footsteps of our founder Amy Proctor — and all the dedicated Presidents since — is both humbling and inspiring.
“I’m proud to carry forward their legacy of compassion, care, and service to our seafaring community.”
