FREMANTLE’S container throughput saw an increase in August, both month-on-month and year-on-year, according to the latest trade statistics from Fremantle Ports.

The WA container port saw a total of 66,706 TEU cross the wharves at the Inner Harbour over the month of August 2021. This was an increase of nearly 10% on the port’s total throughput in July 2021. It was also an increase of 4% on August last year’s throughput of 65,019 TEU.

Comparing August 2021 with July of the same year, we find an increase in exports largely drove the increase in throughput. Total exports rose by almost 22% to 24,459 TEU in August.

Imports saw a decrease of 216 TEU over July to 32,247 TEU.

Drilling down further into the data on imports, we can see that this decrease was driven entirely by a decrease in overseas imports. In July, 28,140 TEU was imported through Freo. But in August, that number fell to 25,772 TEU – a decrease of more than 8%.
