AS THE industry honours International Day of the Seafarer, it’s an excellent time to sign up for Mission to Seafarers Australasia’s inaugural Ports to Peaks Challenge!

This two-day physical and networking event is designed to raise critical funds to support the welfare of seafarers — the often-unseen workforce powering the global economy – and will be held in Thredbo, NSW, from 3-5 December this year.

The Mission to Seafarers Australasia (covering Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the Oceania & Pacific Regions) is calling on the maritime industry to step up for seafarers by nominating teams of three to participate in this unique two-day event:

  • Day 1: Hiking or trail running
  • Day 2: Challenges in the alpine surrounds of Thredbo

The event combines physical endurance, fun and enjoyment with industry connection, offering maritime leaders an opportunity to build relationships, further business collaboration, and most importantly, champion seafarers’ wellbeing.

Three levels of participation ensure the event is accessible to all:

  • The Kiwi Challenge – a scenic and moderate hike through Thredbo’s alpine terrain
  • The Kangaroo Challenge – a more rigorous route for experienced runners seeking elevation and endurance
  • The Cormorant Virtual Challenge – for those unable to attend in person, this option allows individuals and teams to complete the challenges in their home region over a more flexible time period

Whether on the trail or joining remotely, every participant will help shine a light on the needs of seafarers and the critical services that support them, Mission to Seafarers says.

“As one of the largest providers of frontline welfare services for seafarers in the region, Mission to Seafarers Australasia has created the Ports to Peaks Challenge to increase awareness of seafarers’ mental and physical wellbeing; raise vital funds to support chaplaincy services, communications access, transport, and welfare advocacy, and foster cross-sector connections within the maritime and logistics industries,” Australia & PNG regional director Sue Dight says.

“As there are only 30 team spots available for the in-person Thredbo event, we encourage early registration.”

Participants will also enjoy exclusive networking opportunities, including an awards dinner on the final evening — a celebration of endurance, solidarity, and impact.
