The countdown is on to the 30th annual DCN Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards night and with just FIVE WEEKS to get your nominations submitted, DCN is putting the spotlight on the awards themselves—what it takes to win and what it means to those who proudly display their trophy.
THE SPOTLIGHT this week is on the Diversity and Inclusion Award, celebrating organisations and teams that are driving meaningful change in representation, equity, and inclusion across the maritime and logistics sector. From innovative workplace programs and inclusive recruitment strategies to fostering supportive cultures where all employees can thrive, this award highlights the people and policies shaping a fairer, more collaborative industry.
It is perhaps all the more relevant in an industry that historically has been somewhat male-dominated.
This award recognises excellence in both specific port/terminal development projects, technical innovation, overall management achievements and commercial successes.
Positive change can come from leadership vision, regulatory frameworks, or simply the determination to do better. Whatever the driver, the impact resonates across the workforce, setting new standards for industry culture and demonstrating that inclusive practices and business performance go hand-in-hand.
DCN is delighted to announce that the inaugural sponsor of this award — first introduced in 2018 — Port Authority of New South Wales will again put their support behind this this important award, reflecting its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Port Authority of New South Wales chief executive John McKenna said supporting the DCN Australian Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards was about “recognising the often-unseen work that drives the success of our maritime sector”.
“These awards are a key moment in the industry calendar, bringing people together, exchanging ideas, and celebrating meaningful contributions,” Mr McKenna said.
“Marking the 30th anniversary is a significant milestone, and a timely reminder of how far the industry has come and the importance of honouring both its legacy and its future.”
The 2024 winner of the Diversity and Inclusion Award was Svitzer, recognised for their forward-looking initiatives that created measurable improvements in workforce inclusion, career development opportunities, and organisational culture.
Svitzer Australia CPO Carol Lim said the award was “incredibly meaningful” given the many years of hard work by colleagues across Australia and Papua New Guinea.
“From building strong partnerships to providing mentoring, coaching, and support both on board and in our ports, many people have dedicated their time and patience to creating meaningful change,” Ms Lim said.
A more inclusive and diverse workforce will help us build a stronger, more dynamic, innovative and sustainable industry which benefits everyone.

“Receiving the award was a moment to acknowledge that collective effort and contribution.”
Ms Lim said the Diversity & Inclusion Award was particularly relevant for the maritime industry.
“We have an incredible industry that can be really fulfilling and rewarding for people of all walks of life — however, for some, it has historically felt closed off or difficult to access,” she said.

“A more inclusive and diverse workforce will help us build a stronger, more dynamic, innovative and sustainable industry which benefits everyone.
“Awards like this help spotlight the efforts being made across the sector, provide a platform for sharing ideas and initiatives and highlight the vast opportunities available in maritime and logistics.”
Ms Lim said the award was an opportunity to reflect upon both achievement and future goals.
“It validated the effort and commitment from so many of our people, reassuring them that their contributions are not only noticed but also valued,” she said.
“Knowing that our initiatives are leading at an industry level is especially affirming. In our day-to-day work, we’re often focused on delivering for customers and supporting colleagues, so we rarely get a moment to step back and compare our progress.”
