As we count down to the big night, we’re shining a spotlight on the Environmental Award, an accolade that celebrates projects and initiatives making the maritime and logistics industry more sustainable.

From emissions reduction and renewable energy integration to biodiversity initiatives and innovative circular economy practices, the award recognises businesses or people who are clean and green initiatives in the shipping sector.

The award is for initiatives, operating systems, or company policies that deliver sustainable outcomes, reduce marine pollution and protect the natural environment in relation to freight movement.

DCN is proud to announce Port of Newcastle as the sponsor of this award for 2025. The port’s focus on advancing sustainable trade and investing in cleaner energy makes them a perfect fit, particularly given they themselves won the Environmental Award in 2022.

Port of Newcastle is currently at the forefront of clean energy projects. CEO Craig Carmody recently told DCN:

"Everybody wants clean energy, but getting production done requires investment. Australia has what it takes, electricity, water, and expertise, and the Port of Newcastle is ready to support projects that drive a cleaner, sustainable future for the industry."

A spokesperson for Port of Newcastle said:

"The DCN Shipping & Maritime Awards is the highlight of the year in recognising the outstanding work undertaken in the industry, and one of few opportunities the industry comes together on one night to celebrate as a collective. The show of support from industry for the awards each year is a testament to the esteem the awards are held in, which is why after 30 years, the Shipping & Maritime Awards continues to be the pinnacle event of its type in Australia."

The 2024 Environmental Award went to Port of Brisbane/Seaport OPX, which was recognised for a forward-looking project delivering significant environmental benefits to the port precinct and wider supply chain. A spokesperson from Port of Brisbane told DCN:

"Port of Brisbane and DHI Seaport were honoured to receive the Environmental Award at the 2024 DCN Australian Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards for our Green Button technology. It’s not just fantastic industry recognition of this leading innovation, it’s also celebrating collaboration across the Port of Brisbane community and our shared commitment to working towards a sustainable future at the port."
