A CRUISE ship transiting the Bass Strait helped rescue two people from a stricken boat on Tuesday morning.

Victoria Police Air Wing and Water Police, which co-ordinated the rescue, said the man and woman were onboard a boat that encountered difficulty off Wilson’s Promontory at around 2200 on Monday night.

“The two abandoned the vessel and got into a dinghy that was attached to their boat and deployed an emergency beacon (EPIRB),” Police said in a statement.

“Around midnight Air Wing located the dinghy and the joint rescue coordination centre contacted a nearby cruise ship that was in the area.”

It is understood the Grand Princess of Princess Cruises deployed a rescue craft and brought the pair aboard.

Police say neither of the sailors were injured in the incident.
