THE FEDERAL government has announced an $80-million overhaul of marine infrastructure in the Torres Strait and Queensland’s Northern Peninsula.

The Australian and Queensland government have each committed $40 million in funding to improve jetties, wharves and boat ramps.

The governments’ investment commitment follows a recent engineering report into the condition of marine infrastructure in the region.

According to the government, the report identified a need for safer, more appropriate and accessible infrastructure for local communities.

Repairs and upgrades to infrastructure are to happen in a staged process based on engineering priorities and consultation with the communities.

The Australian, Queensland and local governments plan to work in conjunction to identify priorities for investment.

Federal minister for infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government Catherine King said the project would create jobs, build opportunity and unlock economic growth in the region.

“Our joint funding commitment will support the vital marine infrastructure upgrades Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula area communities need to safely and efficiently stay connected,” she said.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk described the waterways of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula as the blue highway for those who live and work in the region.

“Our government recognises how important the connection to water is, which is why we’re making the most significant investment in Torres Strait marine infrastructure in 30 years,” she said.

“This investment is creating 100 local jobs while delivering better, safer access to the communities that rely on this infrastructure the most.”

And minister for transport and main roads Mark Bailey said the modern, fit-for-purpose infrastructure would improve safety and climate resilience.

“The strait is the community’s blue highway and we’re ensuring the jetties, wharves, and boat ramps this community depends on keeps locals moving safely.”

The government said the commitment marks most significant investment in marine infrastructure in 30 years.

The Australian government delivered its half of the investment in the October federal budget.
