MATT Even has joined the team at Esperance Port as trainee marine pilot bringing with him experience with offshore vessels, tankers, general cargo ships and ferries.

Over the past 12 months the Port of Esperance has had a total tonnage of 12,962,879 through the port, primarily comprised of mineral exports and some grain exports on 203 visiting ships.

Esperance regional manager Scott Bates said he was pleased to welcome Matt Even into the role.

“Marine pilots have a very specialised skill set,” Mr Bates said.

“While the position might be called trainee marine pilot, the job requires someone who already has a wealth of experience within the marine industry.

“Matt has been working in the marine industry for the last 18 years, and our Esperance marine pilots already have over 100 years of seafaring experience between them, so Matt will be learning from some of the best.

“Matt will be a great addition to the team, and we look forward to working with him.”

Prior to joining Southern Ports Mr Even worked with offshore vessels, tankers, general cargo ships and ferries.

Mr Even said he was thrilled to take on the role with Southern Ports.

“I’ve wanted to become a marine pilot for as long as I can remember, and Southern Ports operate very professional ports, with really good training programs, so I knew this was where I wanted to be,” he said.

“As a trainee marine pilot, I get the opportunity to learn from the senior pilots and harbour master, to become an expert in local knowledge and Esperance Port ship handling.”
