SOUTHERN Ports and H+H Architects are finalising designs to transform the heritage-listed Albany Pilot Station into a new community precinct.

Designs for the $8.3 million overhaul are centred around the repurposing of heritage-listed Pilot Crew Quarters and Coxswain's Quarters buildings to take advantage of the unique perspective views overlooking the channel between King George Sound to Princess Royal Harbour,.

The plans will breathe new life to the heritage buildings and surrounds, adding a playground, landscaping, bike facilities, and other amenities, the WA Government says. Allowance for mobile catering facilities such as a coffee van have also been made and the design allows for internal and outdoor seating as well as open grassed areas for the community to enjoy. Opportunities to further activate the space, such as interpretation centre elements, a gallery and workshop, are also being considered.

The Pilot Station precinct has a long history in the region, used to house Port of Albany marine pilots from as early as 1853 through to 1936, and its importance to WA’s first port was recognised through its inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places in 2002.

Construction on the project, funded by Royalties for Regions, is set to commence in 2026 with a tender period for companies seeking to deliver the refurbishment open until 16 December 2025.

Minister for Regional Development and Ports Stephen Dawson said the detailed design stays true to Southern Ports' original concept for the precinct, which was to create a community recreational space while sharing the Port of Albany's unique story.

"The Pilot Station was key to the development of WA's first and oldest port and its significance deserves to be centre stage of a thriving tourism area."
