WEST Australian-based shipbuilder Austal’s Philippines division has reached a major milestone in the construction of a ground-breaking, wind powered, cargo-carrying trimaran.

The 67‑metre VELA wind‑powered trimaran is a next‑generation cargo vessel designed to slash emissions on tran-Atlantic routes.

The aluminium hull, assembled and turned earlier in the build program, is now progressing through outfitting as the project moves toward its scheduled 2027 commercial launch.

The vessel is being developed for French operator VELA, with naval architects VPLP Design and MerConcept providing the multihull and sail technology.

The project represents one of the most advanced commercial wind‑propulsion builds underway globally, positioning Austal at the forefront of low‑emissions shipbuilding.

VELA’s trimaran is engineered to operate on 100% wind propulsion, supported by solar generation and hydrogenerators.

The vessel’s six‑sail rig provides 6705 square feet of sail area, delivering an average operating speed of 14 knots with a claimed 99% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional diesel-powered cargo ships.

The trimaran configuration offers enhanced stability and speed, enabling the vessel to maintain reliable schedules on its planned weekly transatlantic service between Normandy and Bordeaux and New Jersey.

With capacity for 415 tonnes and up to 500 pallets per week, VELA is targeting high‑value, low‑volume cargo including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, luxury goods, aerospace components and temperature‑controlled consignments.

The operator expects the vessel to move around 30,000 pallets per year in each direction.

Global logistics provider DHL Global Forwarding France has already committed cargo space as part of VELA’s “pioneer cohort”, signalling early commercial confidence in wind‑powered freight.

The project marks a significant diversification for Austal, traditionally known for defence vessels and high‑speed ferries.

The VELA build demonstrates the shipbuilder’s capability in emerging decarbonisation markets and highlights the growing role of its Balamban, Cebu shipyard in international innovation programs.

Austal has been sharing progress updates through its LinkedIn feed , reflecting strong industry interest in the vessel’s development.

VELA has indicated the vessel is on track for delivery in early 2027, with the operator already promoting a countdown to service commencement.

Once operational, the trimaran is expected to become one of the world’s first fully wind‑powered cargo ships in regular commercial operation.
