NORFOLK Island’s Cascade Pier upgrade has reached the design phase, with Consult Marine contracted to deliver the next stage of the federal government’s $10 million project.
The project, to be delivered by Norfolk Island Regional Council, was launched with a view to improving freight operations, cyclone resilience and safety.
It is also expected to support future freight containerisation at the port.
Regional development minister Kristy McBain said the project was important in several ways.
“Cascade Pier is not only critical for Norfolk’s sea freight supply, it is an iconic part of the island’s coastline and heritage,” she said.
“I am looking forward to seeing this project take shape, informed by those who regularly use the pier and its surrounding waters.”
In a statement, the government stated they were committed to the long-term sustainability and viability of critical freight infrastructure on Norfolk Island.
The upgrades supporting improved structural integrity against cyclones and extreme weather events, following damage caused to the pier during Cyclone Gabrielle in early 2023.
It will also provide for safer and more efficient loading and unloading of goods, vessels, and materials.
Consult Marine has been engaging with stakeholders to ensure future designs reflect local knowledge and the distinct maritime environment of the island, as well as the operational capacity and requirements of the port.
The pier upgrades complement the delivery of two purpose-built cargo transfer vessels, Trumpi and Oefi, which were constructed specifically for Norfolk Island lighterage.
This project was funded by the federal government and delivered by Norfolk Island Regional Council.
They were designed in close consultation with Norfolk Island’s lighterage and stevedoring teams to meet the distinct challenges of freight transfer on island.
The vessels are currently undergoing final testing and commissioning, including sea trials, and are anticipated to be in operation by the end of November.
Member for Bean, David Smith, said the Cascade project could reshape how freight was transported to and from the island.
“From fishing boats to supply ships, Cascade Pier is a lifeline for the community, and I’ll continue working with port users and stakeholders to ensure Norfolk Island’s distinct needs are front and centre of port initiatives,” he said.
