A HANDYSIZE BULK CARRIER which experienced a crane failure while discharging urea in Geelong on Wednesday night [27 May] has been detained by AMSA and banned from handling further cargo using ship’s gear until repairs are made.
The 32,965 GT, 2011-built, PRC-flagged Fei Run, registered to and managed by Shanghai Hongyang Shipping Co Ltd, was working at Lascelles Wharf 2 when it is understood the Number 5 crane suffered gearbox failure, causing the crane jib to crash onto the top of the ship’s bridge and a loaded grab to fall into the hold, apparently striking an excavator.
It is understood no-one was hurt.
An AMSA spokesperson said the Authority “takes the safety of crew, vessels and the public seriously” and was
aware of the incident.
“AMSA has detained the vessel [on Thursday] and prohibited the use of the vessel’s cargo cranes. The vessel will remain under detention until AMSA is satisfied that it is seaworthy and appropriate repairs have been made to the cargo crane.
“AMSA continues to closely monitor the situation and will take further action as necessary," the spokesperson said.

DCN understands there is still about 12,000 tonnes of cargo on board Fei Run, which was moved to the Melbourne anchorage on Saturday afternoon to free the berth for another ship. Around 1,200 tonnes remains in No.5 hold.
Fei Run arrived in Geelong after part-discharge in Port Lincoln and Portland, with the voyage originating in Sohar, Oman and is due to call Burnie as next port.
