DEVELOPMENT applications have been lodged for two new ferry terminals on the Swan River as part of the largest expansion ever undertaken on Perth’s ferry network.
Both proposed terminals, one at Matilda Bay and the other at Applecross, have drawn public criticism.
At Matilda Bay, concerns are mainly around recreational safety endangering sailing, rowing, fishing and swimming groups which use the area, and at Applecross, concerns are about environmental damage impacting dolphins and swans that frequent the area.
In a state government media release, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said ferries have been a safe and reliable form of public transport between Elizabeth Quay and South Perth for more than 100 years, and she said it was exciting to be expanding the service along the Swan River.
"Perth has long talked about better using our river system for transport, and this is what this landmark project will deliver,” Ms Saffioti said.
"These development applications are a significant step forward for this project, which will better connect communities and precincts across our iconic river.”
As part of the development application process, those wanting to have their say on the projects will be able to submit feedback during a three-week public comment period.
The release said two terminal-specific community reference groups will also be established to provide ongoing advice and ensure appropriate controls and measures are in place so the waterway can be shared safely by all users.
Pending the outcomes of the tender process, the Cook Government will release a tender to build the terminal, with construction anticipated to start in mid-2026.
The Matilda Bay and Applecross terminals will be among the first in the expansion of Perth's ferry network, which will see several new stops added and new electric ferries join the fleet over the lifespan of the project.
Each new terminal will include a fixed jetty connecting to the shore, a sheltered waiting area, covered hinged jetty, and floating pontoon where passengers will board the ferries.
The Matilda Bay terminal - located centrally along Hackett Drive - will provide improved connectivity to the University of Western Australia Crawley campus, Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre as well as the Matilda Bay area more broadly.
“The site was chosen following an extensive study and a multi-criteria analysis into potential locations,” the release said.
“Located immediately north of the Raffles Complex, the Applecross terminal will support the area's high-density living and tourism, while also providing an attractive and scenic alternative for commuters.”
A Request for Tender for five new electric ferries was issued in March, seeking West Australian manufacturers to build the vessels.
