Inpex industrial dispute ends

INDUSTRIAL action at Inpex’s Ichthys LNG project is to end tonight (Thursday) after workers endorsed an in principle agreement with the company.

In a statement issued to media, the Offshore Alliance said “unions have notified Inpex there will be a cessation of all strike action by 6pm tonight”.

The announcement brings to a close several weeks of protected industrial action across the Ichthys offshore facilities and Darwin LNG processing operations.

More than 400 union members reportedly endorsed the settlement, which the Offshore Alliance says delivers improvements in job security, pay, career progression, workplace rights and working arrangements.

Local media have reported the deal includes a 3% annual pay rise on top of CPI, though neither party has released full details of the agreement.

The breakthrough follows a failed attempt by Inpex to have the Fair Work Commission suspend or terminate the action. The Commission dismissed the company’s application earlier this week, finding Inpex had not met the threshold required to justify intervention.

The Offshore Alliance had planned to escalate stoppages through to 6 July, but the settlement means all industrial action will now cease today (Thursday).

Inpex has not yet issued a public statement on the agreement, but the resolution is expected to stabilise operations at one of Australia’s largest LNG export projects.

The Ichthys facilities, located off the coast of Western Australia with onshore processing in Darwin, are critical to Japan’s long‑term energy supply and represent one of the largest foreign investments in Australia’s resources sector.
