THE MARITIME Union of Australia’s WA Branch has called on members to vote 'yes' to a new enterprise agreement at the Port of Broome, following a hard‑fought industrial campaign that culminated in an 11‑day shutdown of operations.
The union confirmed the agreement has been finalised and will go to a member vote from 0900 on Wednesday 9 September, marking the end of more than three weeks of strike action and work bans across Broome’s stevedoring and maintenance workforce.
In a message to members, the MUA said the deal followed a “hard‑fought campaign” involving rolling stoppages and a complete port shutdown, and encouraged workers to endorse the agreement “straight away” when voting opens.
The settlement aligns with advice issued earlier by Kimberley Ports Authority, which said an in‑principle agreement had been reached during Fair Work Commission conciliation and that all protected industrial action had been suspended pending the vote.
Industrial action at Broome affected cruise operations, livestock exports and general cargo movements through August, with Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 experiencing repeated stoppages before the shutdown escalated.
If endorsed, the agreement will formally conclude the dispute and restore full operational continuity at the port.
