A NEW transport and logistics hub at Northam, around 100 kilometres east of Perth, scheduled for a December completion, has been delayed until November 2027.

Director corporate affairs and business development for developer Procon Developments Australia, Mia Davies, said the AvonWest development had been hit by delays because of a range of factors, including the recent fuel price spike.

Ms Davies said while activity on site had been quieter during recent months, work on AvonWest continued behind the scenes with preparations now underway for the next phase of activity.

To date, about 700,000 cubic metres of material has been moved as part of the bulk earthworks program, with approximately 5500 cubic metres remaining.

The project team is currently working through programming to restart on-site and the revised time for completion of civil works is November 2027

The 62-hectare AvonWest Logistics & Enterprise Hub is on Yilgarn Avenue in the Shire of Northam and will be a modern industrial precinct with integrated renewable energy and wastewater recycling infrastructure built in from the ground up.

About an hour’s drive from Perth Airport, seven kilometres from the Northam Railhead and with direct access to major highways, the $500 million investment is set to revolutionise Western Australia’s freight network, according to Ms Davies.

Over time, AvonWest will accommodate a range of businesses, from logistics and manufacturing through to technology-enabled and digital industries.

The estate will offer tenants the opportunity to improve turn-around times for large road freight operators.

Managing director of Procon, Leon Key, said many east-west freight trucks reached Northam and were forced to stop, decouple and break down loads before moving into Perth.

“East-west road trains lose time and money when they’re forced to stop in Northam, decouple, and send freight into Perth in multiple runs,’ he said.

AvonWest is claimed to be able to reduce road train turn around times by 48 hours, not having to decouple and make multiple trips into Perth and instead using a more efficient Northam-based fleet of vehicles.
