WESTERN Australia’s northern ports are preparing for the arrival of tropical cyclone Luana.

As of Friday afternoon the weather system was still a strengthening tropical low off the Kimberley coast but was expected to reach tropical cyclone intensity by Saturday, with Broome, Derby and the Dampier Peninsula under watch or warning zones.

Port operations in Broome are in heightened readiness, with potential for escalated cyclone stages as conditions deteriorate.

The new Kimberley Marine Support Base, facing its first cyclone since opening, is keeping a close eye on the cyclone.

“Preparation has already taken place to ensure safety,” the spokesperson said.

“Time will tell the severity of impact, but all vessels have at this stage been redirected.”

The cyclone is expected to reach category 1–2 strength before crossing the coast on Saturday, between Beagle Bay and Cape Leveque.

Gale‑force winds are possible in Broome and Derby within 24–48 hours.

Broome is within the Cyclone Watch/Warning zone which requires vessels to:

  • Ensure engines and machinery are fully operational;
  • Confirm stability and trim;
  • Maintain adequate manning and stores; and
  • Prepare for possible departure on short notice.
