THE ONSLOW Marine Support Base (OMSB) in its relatively short life is proving a success with Western Australia’s decommissioning projects on the North West Shelf.
Its most recent success is its support of Cyan Renewables (rebranded from MMA Offshore in July 2025) through a six-month subsea decommissioning project, providing integrated logistical support across the campaign.
According to an OMSB LinkedIn post, by utilising the facilities in Onslow, Cyan Renewables (operating the MMA Pinnacle) reduced transit times by more than half compared to the next closest port, a saving that compounded steadily across months of operations and regular crew rotations.
“OMSB provided Cyan with a single, coordinated logistics solution covering cargo handling, charter flights, crew movements, bunkering, waste management, and vessel support shifting between alternating ports - all managed through one integrated system across Beadon Creek and the Port of Ashburton, making planning cleaner and execution reliable,” the post said.
“When the campaign threw up challenges, including a significant cyclone, they were worked through quickly and without disruption to Cyan operations.”
The OMSB concept was developed in the mid‑2010s as part of the WA government’s push to diversify Pilbara marine infrastructure. Planning, approvals and early works took several years.
OMSB began functioning as an operational logistics provider in 2020/2021 with early vessel services, cargo handling and ad‑hoc offshore support work.
Full commercial operations began in 2022 with major upgrades including fuel infrastructure, expanded laydown, and integrated operations across Beadon Creek and Port of Ashburton progressively commissioned.
By 2023–2024, OMSB was operating as a fully integrated marine logistics base supporting offshore energy, subsea, dredging and project cargo campaigns.
The project for Cyan Renewables which operates a fleet of 35 specialised vessels is the latest of five major decommissioning projects completed by OMSB
Those projects include Chevron’s Thevenard Island Decommissioning in the Pilbara, early offshore infrastructure removals at Harriet Field in the Carnarvon Basin, Angel gas platform components early phase removals, Enfield field decommissioning subsea infrastructure recovery and Van Gogh Field modular topsides and subsea equipment.
