OOCL expands customer proximity push

OOCL’s Melbourne customers now have the option of moving boxes to/from the Melbourne Intermodal Terminal at Somerton under the carrier’s bills of lading.

The line’s regional sales manager for Australia and New Zealand, Tim Mason, told DCN “We have always been actively pursuing a direct rail solution from the Port of Melbourne for customers with warehouses and distribution centres located away from the port precinct.

“This Melbourne service launch is consistent with OOCL’s strategy to engage with rail / intermodal operators to move containers under B/L closer to the customers unpack site, and then allow them to de-hire at the inland container depot.”

Mr Mason noted OOCL successfully launched its Australia ICD services five years ago in Perth with ICD Forrestfield. “Together with ICD Somerton in Melbourne, we now have a second Perth ICD, and three ICDs in Western Sydney.

“This service enhancement continues our commitment to provide landside services with rail connection to ports and OOCL’s ocean freight services.”

OOCL is promoting three benefits of the new Melbourne option: direct rail to Melbourne’s north on daily shuttle services; ship under an OOCL B/L to final destination Somerton and have the choice of delivering the empty there, saving time and costs; and increase final mile flexibility and reduce costs.

“Need extra days to stage containers before final delivery? Need to hit a final delivery window at your DC?

“With negotiable extended storge days and shorter road cartage distances, ICD Somerton can improve efficiency and reduce costs within your supply chain,” OOCL says.
