OPERATIONAL changes have helped Pilbara Ports to a total monthly throughput of 55.9 million tonnes (Mt) during February 2026, a 13% increase on February 2025.

A Pilbara Ports statement said operational changes include revised vessel movement guidelines for ebb-tide departures, and creating sailing opportunities for larger vessels had improved efficiency.

“Together with ongoing improvements to Dynamic Under Keel Clearance (DUKC), these changes have enabled vessels to make best advantage of available sailing windows, safely maximise cargo and contribute to increased overall shipping volumes,” the statement said.

The increase marks the third consecutive month of record throughput at the Port of Port Hedland..

The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly record throughput of 40.6Mt, of which 40Mt was iron ore exports. This was an 8% increase of total throughput compared with February 2025.

Imports through Port of Port Hedland totalled 168,000 tonnes, a decrease of 8% compared with February 2025.

The Port of Dampier delivered a total throughput of 12.5Mt, a 25% increase on February 2025.

Imports through the Port of Dampier totalled 131,000 tonnes, an increase of 40% on February 2025.

Several factors influence the fluctuation of throughput, including changes in market conditions, port maintenance operations and customer needs.
