RECORD trade figures have reinforced Pilbara Ports' position as the world’s biggest bulk export port.
In figures released on 28 July, Pilbara Ports reported 804.1 million tonnes of throughput across Port Hedland, Dampier, Ashburton and Varanus Island in 2025–26.
The result eclipses last year’s record of 775.7 million tonnes and represents the largest year‑on‑year increase since 2017–18.
Pilbara Ports said the record equates to an estimated $150 billion in export value, underscoring the Pilbara’s central role in Western Australia’s economy and global supply chains.
Chief executive Samuel McSkimming said the milestone reflected disciplined operations and the strength of the region’s export networks.
“Moving more than 800 million tonnes safely through our ports is a significant achievement,” Mr McSkimming said.
“This result belongs to the people who keep our ports and export supply chains operating safely every day… It reflects disciplined execution, strong partnerships and the Pilbara’s capability to keep trade moving for customers around the world.”
Port Hedland again delivered the bulk of the throughput, handling 580.4 million tonnes. Dampier managed 178.3 million tonnes, while Ashburton recorded 45.2 million tonnes.
Iron ore exports rose 4% to 759.4 million tonnes, with LNG and salt totalling 26 million tonnes and 5.3 million tonnes respectively. The network recorded 9,499 safe vessel visits, averaging 26 per day.
The result continues a multi‑year trend of growth. WA government releases show Pilbara Ports set consecutive records in 2023–24 (758.3 million tonnes) and 2024–25 (775.7 million tonnes), driven by sustained iron ore demand and major infrastructure investment across the region.
Pilbara Ports also reported $1.17 million in community investment across 76 organisations, supporting wellbeing, education and regional development.
