FREMANTLE Port’s run of disruptive weather is set to continue with the port issuing a shipping agents memo warning of adverse weather from 14 to 16 September.
The notice from harbour master Captain Savio Fernandes said current weather forecasts indicate a prolonged adverse weather event for the two-day period.
Capt Fernandes warned that recent weather experienced had been more severe than forecasts had suggested.
“To ensure good risk management during the adverse weather and in the interests of Port, Terminal infrastructure and Vessel safety, the following will be implemented in preparation for the adverse weather:
“Vessels at the FPA Inner anchorages – Vessels at Gage Roads, ORAN and ORA anchorages will be required to proceed to sea for the period of impact. Any decision to leave a vessel at anchor will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. This requirement is based upon forecast wind force and prolonged directional impact expected at these anchorages. All charges for pilotage and towage shall be to the vessel’s account. Vessels required to proceed to sea will be instructed to do so by Fremantle VTS.
“Vessels at the FPA Outer anchorages - All vessels are required to heave anchor and proceed to sea for the period of impact.
“Vessels at Cockburn Sound berths (KBT, KBJ, ALCOA, ORJ, AMC) and Inner Harbour berths will be required to evacuate their respective berths on a case-by-case basis to minimise risk. All vessels from North Quay berths will be required to evacuate berths and proceed to sea. Fremantle Ports’ scheduling team will keep agents informed accordingly. All charges for unberthing/berthing pilotage and towage shall be to the vessel’s account.
“Preparations for and the vessel evacuation process in preparation for the adverse weather will commence on Saturday - 13 September 2025.”
The notice went on to say that weather forecasts are being frequently monitored and any changes to the above would be passed on, including notifications regarding resumption of berthing of vessels.
Capt Fernandes said it is important that all vessels evacuating from the port stay well clear of Fremantle Ports’ approaches and the surrounding coastal areas.
