A ROGUE wave hit the cruise ship Viking Polaris while it was sailing towards Ushuaia Argentina last week; one passenger was killed and a further four passengers were injured.

A statement from Viking Cruises said the incident happened on 29 November at 2240 local time. The ship sustained “limited” damage and arrived at Ushuaia on 30 November.

“We are investigating the facts surrounding this incident and will offer our support to the relevant authorities,” the company said.

Viking Cruises said it had cancelled the ship’s next scheduled departure – an itinerary from 5 to 17 December that was to cross Drake Passage to Antarctica and back to Ushuaia.

Viking Polaris (IMO 9863209) is a Norwegian-flagged passenger ship that was built this year. The ship is 204 metres long and has a width of 24 metres.

According to Viking Cruises, the vessel carries 378 guests with a crew of 256.
