THE SEAFARERS Welfare Award is a much-anticipated honour, reflecting those who contribute to the betterment of mariners who work in sometimes difficult conditions.

Last year, the award went to Michael Kelly, who was recognised for his outstanding commitment to the safety, wellbeing and support of visiting seafarers.
Captain Kelly, a marine pilot for Port Authority of NSW, was recognised for transforming shore leave for crews at the remote Kurnell terminal in Sydney.
Recognising the challenges seafarers face accessing Sydney, Captain Kelly introduced preloaded Opal cards, allowing crews to explore the city safely and affordably.
This simple, low-cost initiative has opened Sydney to hundreds of seafarers, offering much-needed rest, connection, and mental health support.
Speaking after last year’s award, Port Authority of NSW chief executive John McKenna (Captain Kelly’s boss) said “Michael’s care for seafarers goes well beyond the duties of a pilot”.
“He brings compassion, professionalism and a genuine sense of responsibility to every interaction, and his support makes a real difference to people who spend months away from home,” Mr McKenna said.
“This recognition is a reflection of his character and the respect he has earned right across our ports.”
Sponsoring the award this year is CSL Australia Ltd, the largest owner/operator of dry bulk coastal vessels operating in Australian waters.
Vice-president, commercial, Australia, Daniel Wilson said at CSL, “more than 1,900 seafarers steer our fleet across the world - and every one of them deserves our unwavering support”.
“Life at sea demands resilience, commitment and time away from loved ones, and we believe their welfare must sit at the heart of our industry,” Mr Wilson said.
“CSL is honoured to sponsor an award that shines a spotlight on those who step up, stand out and make a real difference for the seafarers navigating Australia’s waters.”
This year’s DCN 2026 Shipping & Maritime Industry Awards will be held at The Star Brisbane on Thursday 26 November.
