THE AUSTRALIAN Mariners Welfare Society on 17 May held its annual general meeting followed by a function for both members and guests.

The event gave AMWS members and others involved with seafarer welfare a chance to meet and discuss issues around seafarer welfare in Australia.

In attendance were AMSA personnel, members of the League of Ancient Mariners and representatives from the Sydney Port Welfare Committee, the Tas Bull Foundation and the Mission to Seafarers Sydney.

AMWS was founded in 1865 at the Sydney Sailors’ Home in the Rocks. The home provided accommodation and meals for crew of visiting ships.

After the Sydney Sailors’ Home closed in 1979, the AMWS turned its activities to providing financial support and assistance to other organisations that provide assistance to seafarers around the Australian coast.
