The Bradfield Bulletin - 23 May 2025

THIS morning, I was jolted awake by my alarm - only to realise it wasn’t real. I had dreamt it. Imagine my joy when I discovered I still had another glorious half hour to sleep (and yes, that bonus nap was the best part of my morning so far! 😂).

This week in Australia, the Victorian Government released its 2025–26 State Budget, prompting a mix of reactions. On top of that, wild weather has been sweeping across NSW and Victoria, causing disruptions and delays for freight throughout both states.

Internationally, there’s quite a bit going on. China–US trade is booming as exporters rush to move goods before the 90 day tariff pause window closes, triggering a spike in ocean freight rates and a wave of front loading. General Rate Increases (GRIs) are back in the spotlight, with freight rates beginning to creep upward.

Remember those sticky toys you used to throw at the wall that slowly climbed down? That’s how many in the industry are viewing some GRIs - maybe they'll stick, or maybe they’ll just slide off and fall straight to the floor.

Meanwhile, concerns about port congestion are resurfacing, with many wondering how aging U.S. infrastructure will cope with this renewed surge in cargo.

Other geopolitical tensions are also adding pressure. The Houthis have warned vessels against calling at Israel’s Port of Haifa, and regional container trade is being shaken by escalating conflict between India and Pakistan.
