BULK vessel BBC Uranus (IMO 9947768) has joined Chris Hemsworth in starring in filming of the new Netflix movie Extraction 3 at Port Kembla.
Port Authority of New South Wales marine pilot Gyles Deacon guided the 180-metre, Liberian-flagged vessel into harbour in June, allowing for filming to occur.
PANSW head of regional ports, Peter Ernst, said they were “incredibly proud to have supported the filming of Extraction 3 in Port Kembla”.
“From the outset, the production team has demonstrated a genuine commitment to working with our local businesses and engaging local people,” Mr Ernst said.
“The economic benefits will be felt well beyond the harbour. It's one of the more unique ways Port Authority is helping to grow trade and tourism in New South Wales."
The Port Authority worked with state and federal government agencies, including Screen NSW and local MPs, to help facilitate filming in Port Kembla.
“More than 800 commercial vessels call into Port Kembla each year, each guided by our marine pilots, and each requiring careful planning, local knowledge and precise execution,” PANSW said in a social media post.
Extraction 3 has been described as a “high-octane thriller”, starring Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani, with production occurring in Sydney as well as at Port Kembla.
The Extraction series of movies is based upon a graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and from a story by Ande Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo.
In a press release, producer Patrick Newall said they had enjoyed “tremendous cooperation” from Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke and PANSW head of regional ports Peter Ernst.
“This is a big movie and these invaluable partners have all helped make our production here possible,” Mr Newell said.
Upon its debut, Extraction was said to have broken viewership records for Netflix, suggesting plenty of exposure is likely for both BBC Uranus and Port Kembla.
