JELLYFISH are stinging mariners at the Port of Dampier.

Pilbara Ports has issued a notice warning that an increased number of jellyfish have been observed waters in and around the Port of Dampier.

The port authority said two mariners had already been stung.

Two potential risks from the presence of jellyfish have been reported.

Seawater strainers are being blocked causing issues related to cooling, resulting in engine slow down and shutdowns and jellyfish stingers coming in contact with the exposed skin of the crew.

“This hazard has been reported in two instances,” the notice said.

One crew member was cleaning seawater strainers to remove the jellyfish and in the other instance crew handling a mooring rope after the rope had been in the water was stung.

The notice said vessels should carry out a risk assessment.

They should inspect and clear their seawater strainers before commencing inbound and outbound passage.

Cooling temperature and pressure should be monitored whilst transiting in port waters and engine crew should be on standby to respond without delay.

Appropriate PPE should be worn by crew clearing the filters and any deck crew handling the mooring ropes to prevent any contact with the jellyfish.
